Paris for Halloween

We planned to be in Paris on the 31st so we could enjoy our grand children here. Lizzy, Parker and Austin are fun kids. So we spent the day with them in their flat on Varsailles. Breakfast was crepes and syrup, orange juice and good fun with the kids. Parker and Austin had been suffering from the flu but they got better each hour.

Side walk outings took us to the bakery for bagets, to the market for some fruit and vegetables and some cheese. Everything was great especially the fromage (cheese). It was so good when combined with fresh bread. Extra sharp cheddar was the purchase but the specialty cheeses were certainly available as well. Most of the cheese is made from milk that is not pasteurized and is excellent. We've yet to try it.

The afternoon included making graham cracker houses with the little kids, preparing lunch then driving downtown to see the sights.  Behind us on a cloudy day is a famous landmark we all recognize.  Mostly spending time with our family becomes our wish.

Shopping at the local outdoor market which offered everything from fruits and vegetables to cheese, meats, fish and nuts.  It is all farm fresh and delicious.

Movie time in 3D.

Nothing pleases a grandmother more than seeing her family.

We all got into the project of house building.  The flu had taken down Parker and Austin earlier but now its on the run and they are up and playing.

Here is the project finished and drying.  We were kids again and the real kids dressed in their costumes for the evening a little early for pictures.  Later they came to our hotel so they could trick or treat a little.  Doing that isn't a thing in France.  Can't stop a good thing !!

It looks like a need for some fig leaves.  Posted by Picasa

More scenes along the way - Random order

Downtown Milan with the moon rising over a near by hotel sign.  This describes our feelings about Italy best.  Bella Luna tutti.

Its everywhere so we passed up the typical Italian Restaurante in favor of classico americano cousine.  Hows that for mixed language adjectives.

And a little liquid.

Getting around is very convenient if you have a scooter.  In many cases these are young Italian women.  Never consider these to be timid either.  They can cut through traffic with the very best of them.  Lines on the street are mere suggestions.  It's much more like a dance to drive here.  Be aware of your neighbor and don't bump them.

Northern Italy and on to France

Thursday was a beautiful day in Como.  Our hotel was a beauty located in a beautiful place.  The earth is so grand to behold.  Our travels took us back along the edge of the lake and on to Milan where we spent the night, returned our car, then slept before boarding the train for Paris.

Pictures never communicate the complete range of feelings felt best by actual personal experience but if you will allow yourself the imagination of seeing as though you are present in this warm but seasonally fall climate the beauty will permeate.

High on the hill above the settlement, one courageous soul constructed this beauty to capture the view of Lake Como from two levels above the ground floor.  Imagine also this fall scene shrouded in snow which occasionally measures up to three feet on the front porch.

My trusty travel buddy and wonderful eternal companion is prepared for any need with a series of bags and tools.  Its fall you know so an umbrella is essential .

Centrale Statione in Milan serves the northern travelers needs accessing most of Europe from this aged and historic location.

Viewing the scenery from a speeding train can be challenging. This hill top retreat conjured up interest in how this historical sight was set atop this spot and why it is here other than a prominent viewing location.  Forgive the poor photo  but we were moving right along our pathway to Paris.

Mid-way through the day we passed through this lovely scene directly in the Alps.  Albertville was the site of the Winter Olympics several times ago.

Hill top castles dot the landscape providing plenty of advance warning of any intruders.

Paris was bustling with traffic on this Saints day holiday.  Mike picked us up from the train station and gave us the mini-Paris road tour.  Rain threatened but held off throughout the afternoon.  We were soon at their flat in Versailles.  What a charming place to live.

Genoa and Lake Como

Wednesday was a sight seeing day.  We drove from Genoa on the coast northward to Milan and on to Lake Como.  Timing for travel could not be better.  Weather is perfect and most of the crowds are reduced to locals.  Getting out of Genoa was fun navigating but that could be said of every Italian city.  Space is very limited so every square inch is used for something.  Roads are just barely wide enough in the cities and streets are sometimes not.  When you come here prepare to share the road in every sense of the word.  Motorbikes outnumber cars.  Autos are all small compact with lots of Smart cars and tiny tiny Fiats.

Most cities of size have their own system of directions different but understandable once we got used to it.  Our Garmin Nuvi has been our crutch in tight places.   In Genoa on Tuesday afternoon, we hit town at rush hour.  Motor bikes were coming at us like we were in a motocross race.  I pushed a yellow light without being aware of what I was doing ONCE.  Instantly, I had 45 friends teaching me both the language and how to drive simultaneously.  Claudia is hoping to calm down soon.  But with some luck we circuitously wound our way through tunnels, side streets, between motor bikes and cars to enter the Piazza where Nuvi told us to go.  There before us was our hotel.  Happy day !!

Tunnels everywhere as we drove to and out of Genoa.  It's proximity to the sea coast is much like Rio de janeiro in Brazil.  Huge granite mountains extending right to the water leaving no options but to carve through them for access.  Every sq ft of space is used and has seen hundreds of tenants in the 2500 years of civilization in Italy.  Likely more than can be documented.

Leaving Genoa we traveled northeast toward the Swiss border.  Many more mountains as you get right into Como itself.  Milan is on the route but we elected to have a brief break from driving and then continue on.

It is wonderful how this country has used the resources here to build its homes, streets and offices.  Everything is stone or masonry.  Did I mention the use of space?  If you can't grow laterally, grow vertically.  This good woman grew where she was planted and continued on planting more.

Nothing is constructed on flat earth.  The earth is leveled out on ledges and building proceeds from there.  Masons are artisans with their stone.  Buildings are intended to last a very long time.  Off her porch a view worth a thousand early mornings awaits her.  The mist seems to stay throughout the day but east across the lake is another small village accessible by ferry.

Our hotel faces the south so we'll enjoy the day once the sun decides to get up.  Below are several pictures taken as we wandered up to this end of the lake.  We've searched for the private villa of our dear and close friend George and today we'll keep our invitation to have brunch.  Claudia had some advice for him concerning his new friend.

If you need exercise, this is the place to live.  Nothing is easy.  The people seem to have resided for generations from the brief visits we've had with them.  These are very friendly people who do their best to help us.  We know so little Italian but use whatever we can.  Many of the local residents don't speak too much English however a goodly number speak some with the younger ones the best.

Looking back west and south, the mist settles in over the water as evening descends.  Access to each dwelling is gained using a series of switchbacks.  These are protected by retaining walls, fences and markings to allow the initiated a measure of safety.

Mountains rise high above the villages and supply a constant stream of fresh water to the lake.  Running between the buildings it meanders its way guarded by the stone bed and walls.

As we ventured for some toothpaste at the Farmicia another friendly face greeted me and inquired about our travels.  Then he posed and said "Ciao - Bonjourno.  But I think he says that to everyone.

Our lovely hotel in this little village.  The street runs just in front of here which you can see just below the stone wall behind the sign.  I'd estimate the width of the two way street to be 16 feet.
David stands as a young lad prepared to meet the giant Goliath, armed with a sling in his left hand and draped over his left shoulder the strands leading to the stone filled pouch in his right hand. The gallery discourages photographing this masterpiece but without a flash I took this picture on October 27th, 2009. It was carved by Michelangelo in 1501 and completed in 1504 and stands 17 feet tall. He believed the image of David already existed within the stone he was carving just as our soul exists within our own body but is yet to be revealed by our actions.

Another artist anticipated our visit and carved Claudius draping her arm around Maximus in such a caring way. His rendition must have been seen in a vision of the hereafter when not a hair of Maximus' head would be lost.

We departed Florence about 11:30 and drove to Pisa then on to Genoa. Enjoyed a great dinner in a fine Italian restaurant named Le Rune, located down one small alley and up another on the left. You can't miss it. Sure enough. Without this little Garmin nuvi we would be toast.

Genoa is a great Mediterranean city of 600,000 plus those surrounding. Tourism is big as seen by the cruise boats in the harbor. See the next posts.

Sparkling white marble still looks grand. Next to the Douma the tilt is more noticable. Great little town however.

African nationals set up shop nearby to sell their wares and watches.

As we left Florence, the hills were alive with fall colors.  Our route took us directly west to Pisa on A12 highway.  Our little Peugeot wagon purred along at 130 kph just fine.  We arrived in Pisa just about time for lunch and a tour around the Piazza with the engineering problem.  The Churches are spectacular in Italy.  This one is no different.  You will note the intricacies that surround each of these buildings.   Then we were off to Genoa for the night and on to Lake Como on Wednesday.  More pictures from there.

It was high time for some old fashioned Italian accordion music.  Tradition dies slowly if ever and in this case its just a good thing.

Next came Pisa

PePe is in the Casa !! He's been busy for so many years but now he comes out to show his style. We found him on a little corner in Florence Italy along with more shops with glad rags than is possible to count. Glass and glitz are everywhere. And....we're getting ready for a real life Burger soon.

Tuscany in the morning. Bon journo tutti. (Good morning everyone)

Another beauty standing as a pillar of strength to these great Italian people. They walk like everything is life saving. Perhaps it is.

The River Arno on Tuesday morning October 27th, 2009. All rights reserved. Today we see the statue of David then drive to Pisa and on to Genoa for the night along the Mediterranean
